Recalling my SCB Marathon 2019
I went to the start line of the Standard Chartered Singapore Marathon on the evening of 30 Nov 2019 before 6pm. I was trying to be very cool about the whole event, I told myself to really take it easy. But, still I was feeling as always apprehensive about how my body is going to take the 5-6 hours of running and walking.
I started really easy, I tried to run as normally as possible, no rush and keeping the mind clear. The first few km was slow as usual, with the large number of runners around. I reached the 5km mark in 31min44sec. Although it was evening time with no sunshine, it was hot and humid. The next 5km was completed in 32min13sec, about 29 sec slower than the first 5km.
The route was boring, the section passing below the elevated highway next to the old railway station was a lousy one. It was even worst thereafter, as you run up another elevated highway. The 15km mark was after the turnaround from the highway section, which I reached in 1hour37min2sec. I was glad to pass by Vivo city, the mall just beside the elevated highway just past 16km.
I reached the 20km mark in 2hr12min01sec, finally we are entering the downtown area but just briefly only. The 21km mark was around the Garden by the bay, a garden and a tourist attraction. I reached the half way mark around 2hr20min, and I could feel my body already started to weaken significantly
My time taken was 44:21 from 20km to 25km, I was really struggling but I just push on. I knew that it would only get worse, I could only try my best not to start walking. The weather was really humid as well, I started to pour water over my head to cool my body at every water station after the half way mark. I kept having a fear that my body would overheat and shut down if I continue pushing myself to run. But, at the same time I dare not stop for more than 15 seconds at any one time, as I was afraid that I might just gave up and walk all the way to the end.
The next 5km from 25kmto 30 km, I struggled even more, it took me 46min 47sec. I was now just shuffling along, I was not even really running at all anymore. I took more than 9min to cover every km, but I could not have done much as my body had given up.
I continued to struggle the next 5km to 35km, I took 46min01sec to cover this 5km block. I am almost reaching the marina barrage, I just ran on with only the aim to finish the race as soon as possible. I took the longest time to cover this last 5km to 40km, I took 50min34sec. It was rediculously slow at 10 min per km, I did tried to speed up, but my body could not respond.
Finally I was left with 2.195km, as usual I miraculously could mustered whatever energy that I had to finish in 15min13sec. Final time 5hr34min56sec, 14th marathon completed!
